"Emergency Response Headquarters for the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake" established

April 14, 2016

In reaction to the major earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture on the evening of April 14, the Party immediately established an "Emergency Response Headquarters for the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake" under the direct leadership of Party President Shinzo Abe. The most intense seismic waves were measured in Mashiki at 7, which is the highest level on Japan's seismic intensity scale.

The Headquarters is chaired by Secretary-General Sadakazu Tanigaki, with General Council Chairperson Toshihiro Nikai (Chairperson of the Party's Comprehensive Research Commission on the Establishment of the Disaster Resilient Japan) and Chairperson of the Policy Research Council, Tomomi Inada, serving as Acting Chairpersons. The next day, April 15, a fact-finding mission led by Hiroyuki Sonoda, member of the House of Representatives, visited the disaster area and spoke with Governor Ikuo Kabashima about responses, promising to support evacuation procedures for residents as well as providing necessary supplies and medical attention.

Aftershocks continue to hit the area, and many residents have been forced to live in shelters. The LDP will work with the government to do everything possible to assist the victims and ensure they are well cared for.
