General election victory: Kishida Administration wins mandate; LDP/Komeito alliance captures 293 seats

The voters have chosen to maintain the LDP-Komeito coalition as the ruling party. Votes in the 49th House of Representatives general election were counted on October 31, giving an "absolute majority" of 261 seats (189 single-member districts, 72 proportional representatives) to the Liberal Democratic Party and affirming confidence in its ability to stably lead the Diet. Adding in the 32 seats captured by the Komeito, the LDP's coalition partner, the ruling coalition as 293 seats, far exceeding a majority (233 seats) of the Lower House. As a result, LDP President Fumio Kishida met with Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi of the Komeito on November 1 to confirm the continuation of the coalition government. A leadership election will be conducted at a special session of the Diet, at which time the second Kishida Cabinet is expected to be formed.
