His Majesty the King Felipe VI and Her Majesty the Queen Letizia of the Kingdom of Spain visited Japan as state guests and met with Prime Minister and LDP President Shinzo Abe. During the banquet dinner, the discussion centered on Francisco de Xavier, the first missionary who introduced Christianity to Japan, and Diego Velázquez, whose exhibit is scheduled to be held in Japan next year in commemoration of 150 years of diplomatic relations. Both countries expressed expectations for their relations to continue to develop and grow.
