North Korean ballistic missiles land in Japan's EEZ: Urgent need for Japan to rebuild its readiness

At around 7:34 a.m. on March 6, North Korea fired four ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, of which three landed inside Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

In response, LDP called a meeting of the board of the Emergency Response Headquarters for North Korea's Nuclear Tests and Missile Launches (Chairperson: Secretary-General Toshihiro Nikai) to hear from relevant ministries and agencies about the government's response. A full session was then held to discuss future actions.

The Party's Research Commission on Security (Chairperson: Hiroshi Imazu, Member of the House of Representatives) has a "Study Team on Ballistic Missile Defense" (Chairperson: Itsunori Onodera, Member of the House of Representatives) to study the function of Japan's Missile-Defense System, and members in attendance argued the need for quickly rebuilding readiness.

Opinions were also expressed for amending relevant laws to allow shoot-down orders to be issued if there is a risk of missiles landing in the EEZ, and the urgent need tobuild a system able to communicate information to all Japanese vessels was also articulated

Meanwhile, the "Study Team on the Action Plan for the Solution of Abduction Issues" (Chairperson: Ichiro Tsukada, member of the House of Councillors), functioning under the Party's Headquarters for North Korean Abductions (Chairperson: Eriko Yamatani, Member of the House of Councillors), began on March 8 to study stronger independent sanctions to be taken by Japan against North Korea.
