Memorial Ceremony to Commemorate the Fallen on the 70th Anniversary of the End of the Battle of Okinawa

June 23, 2015

June 23 marked the 70th anniversary of the day on which the Second World War Battle of Okinawa ended (Okinawa Memorial Day), and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended a memorial service to honor all of the war dead in Okinawa. After a moment of silence and the laying of flowers, the Prime Minister said, "We cannot approve of the heavy burdens that have been placed on Okinawa by the presence of bases" and "it is important for all of the Japanese people share the burdens."
