Following the resignation of President Taro Aso, the Party held an election to choose the 24th President at Party Headquarters on September 28. A total of 199 Diet members voted at headquarters while Party members from across the country, who were allocated 300 votes, voted at Party prefectural branches up until September 27.

Sadakazu Tanigaki, former Chairman of the Policy Research Council of the Party obtained 300 votes and therefore was elected as new Party President. This was approved at the Joint Plenary Meeting of Party Members of Both Houses of the Diet when candidate Tanigaki was confirmed as new Party President.

  • 1983 First elected to the House of Representatives, (Elected 10 times) Previously served as Minister of State for Science and Technology, Chairman of the Financial Reconstruction Commission, Chairman of the National Public Safety Commission, Minister for Finance, Chairman of the Policy Research Council of the Party, Minister of Land,Infrastructure,Transport and Tourism
