First Japanese Prime Minister to Board a US Aircraft Carrier, Demonstrating the Strength of “Japan-US Ties”

October 18, 2015

Prime Minister and LDP President Shinzo Abe boarded and toured the USS "Ronald Reagan," a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier assigned to the Yokosuka Base in October. He had high praise for the carrier and its participation in 'Operation Tomodachi;' it was one of the first vessels to arrive on the scene and begin assisting victims after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The Prime Minister said the carrier was a "symbol of Japan-US ties" and emphasized the importance of solidarity in the Japan-US alliance.
