Prime Minister Abe is the first sitting prime minister of Japan to visit Ukraine since its independence. During his meeting with President Poroshenko, he clarified Japan's desire to take an active role in the peaceful, diplomatic solution of the problems confronting the country, saying, "Japan does not tolerate any attempt to alter the status quo by force. We have been consistent in our respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity."
