Comment by Secretary-General Shigeru Ishiba “Life above all else” Priorities during times of disaster

August 26, 2014

There are numerous press helicopters flying over the disaster area. We have told them to take special care to avoid accidents, but as I watch the coverage on television, I would also ask them to remember that people are searching for survivors, listening for even the smallest sound that might lead to discovery, and the families are standing by hoping and praying for their loved ones. We do not want noise from the helicopters to impede the rescue efforts.
Some have asked how we can simultaneously respect the freedom of the press and also ensure that reporting activities do not impede the discovery of survivors, and this is something that we need to investigate as a party. I think the principle must be "life above all else," and the feelings of the families take priority.
